Are electric blankets safe?

Mostly yes, with real exceptions that depend on the blanket's age, its certification, and who is under it. Here is what the standards and the manuals actually say.

A modern electric blanket certified to UL 964 and carrying a UL or ETL mark, used as instructed and not folded or bunched while running, is a low-risk appliance. The genuine risks are concentrated in old blankets, damaged wiring, and users who cannot feel that they are getting too hot. Those three cover most of what goes wrong.

What the certification marks actually mean

Nearly every listing in this category says ETL certified, and most buyers read past it. It is worth two minutes of your attention because it is the single most checkable safety claim on the box.

The three risks that are actually real

1. Age

A blanket's heating element is a wire that flexes every time you move, every night, for years. Eventually insulation cracks. Fire services and consumer bodies broadly converge on replacing a heated blanket after about ten years, and sooner if it has been washed often or stored folded hard.

2. Bunching, folding and trapped heat

Every manual in our set says some version of the same thing: lay it flat, do not fold it while it is running, do not tuck it in tightly, and do not put anything heavy on top of it. The reason is thermal rather than electrical. A blanket dissipates heat across its whole surface; fold it and you halve the surface while the element keeps producing, and a hot spot forms.

The same logic covers the controller. Several makers state in capital letters that the controller must never be covered while in use. It is the part that senses temperature, and burying it under a duvet is how you defeat the safety feature you paid for.

3. Users who cannot feel the heat

This is the risk that matters most and gets discussed least. A blanket that is merely warm to a healthy adult can burn someone with reduced sensation, and low-temperature contact burns happen at temperatures well below what feels dangerous, given long enough. Auto shut-off: useful, and not the whole answer

Every product we track has one, from two hours on a wearable poncho to twelve on most bed blankets. It is a genuinely good feature and it is also frequently over-read. Auto shut-off protects against the blanket being left on for days. It does nothing about a fold, a covered controller, or a frayed cord, which are the failure modes that actually cause incidents. Questions people actually ask

Do electric blankets cause fires?
They can, and the risk concentrates in old and damaged blankets rather than new certified ones. The failure modes that matter are cracked element insulation from years of flexing, folding or bunching a blanket while it runs, and covering the controller. Do electric blankets turn off automatically?

Are electric blankets safe to use all night?
For a healthy adult with a modern certified blanket, generally yes, and the auto shut-off will end the session for you regardless. The people for whom all-night use is not advisable are covered on who should not use one.
Why are heated blankets said to be bad for you?
Three separate claims get bundled together: burn risk for people with reduced sensation, which is real and specific; fire risk from old or damaged blankets, which is real and age-dependent; and EMF exposure, which is the one with the least support. We take them apart individually rather than answering all three at once.
