Where a heated blanket can and cannot go
Two rules cover almost every placement question: heat rises, and anything that traps heat against the element is a problem.

A blanket goes on top of you, or between the top sheet and the duvet. A mattress pad goes on the mattress, under the fitted sheet. Neither goes under a mattress, under a memory foam topper, or under anything heavy. Heat rises, and trapped heat is the failure mode every manual warns about.
The two rules
Almost every placement question resolves to one of these, and they are worth understanding rather than memorizing because they generalize to situations no manual lists.
- 1Heat rises. Warmth from an element travels up far more readily than down. Anything you want warmed should be above the element, and anything between the element and you is a layer that heat has to get through.
- 2Trapped heat is the hazard. An element dissipates heat across its whole surface. Anything that stops that dissipation, a fold, a heavy topper, a mattress, a pile of laundry, means the element keeps producing while the heat has nowhere to go.

The topper question, which is the common one
Memory foam and heated bedding interact badly in one direction and fine in the other, and the reason is that foam is a good insulator.
Put a heated pad under a memory foam topper and you are heating the underside of the topper. Some warmth eventually conducts through, most of it does not, and you have created a warm layer sandwiched between two insulators. You get a disappointing result and a trapped-heat condition at the same time.
Put the pad on top of the topper, under the fitted sheet, and it works exactly as designed. That is the answer to almost every version of this question and it is worth stating simply: the heat source goes above the insulating layer. More on the specifics in heated bedding on memory foam.
The one absolute prohibition
Never put a heated blanket or pad under the mattress. It is the clearest rule on this page and it comes up often enough that people evidently try it.
A mattress is heavy and highly insulating. An element beneath one has no path for heat to escape in any direction, which is the trapped-heat condition at its most complete. There is no version of this that works and no setting low enough to make it sensible.
Waterproof protectors over an element
A slightly subtler case. A waterproof mattress protector is deliberately non-breathable, and layering one directly over a heated pad puts an impermeable sheet over an element.
The better solution is a pad that has the waterproofing built in, so the barrier is engineered into the same product as the element rather than added over it. Bedsure's cotton-top pad has a TPU layer for exactly this reason; the options are on waterproof heated mattress pads.
The folding rule, which is placement in disguise
Every manual in our set says lay it flat, do not fold or bunch it while running, and do not put anything heavy on top. Those are three statements of the same rule and the reason is the second principle at the top of this page.
The version people miss is tucking. Tucking a heated blanket in tightly at the sides folds the element back under itself along the whole length of the bed, which is exactly the condition the instruction prohibits, arrived at by a route that feels like tidiness rather than misuse.
Questions people actually ask
- Can you put an electric blanket under a mattress topper?
- No. Foam insulates, so an element under a topper heats the underside of the topper rather than you, and creates a trapped-heat condition. Put it on top of the topper, under the fitted sheet.
- Does an electric blanket go over or under the sheet?
- A blanket goes on top of you, either directly or between the top sheet and the duvet. A heated mattress pad goes on the mattress under the fitted sheet. They are different products with different placements.
- Can you put an electric blanket under the mattress?
- Never. A mattress is heavy and highly insulating, so an element underneath it has no way to shed heat in any direction. This is the clearest prohibition in this article.
- Can you use a waterproof mattress protector with a heated mattress pad?
- Layering a non-breathable protector directly over an element traps heat. If you need waterproofing, buy a pad with a barrier layer built in rather than adding one over the top.
