What actually goes wrong
Fire risk in this category is overwhelmingly a story about old blankets and damaged wire, not about new ones. Here are the three failure modes and what catches them.

Three failure modes account for effectively all of it: cracked element insulation from years of flexing, trapped heat from folding or covering, and cord or connector damage. All three concentrate in old and mistreated blankets. A new certified blanket, laid flat, is a low-risk appliance.
Failure mode 1: the element insulation cracks
The one that matters most and the one you cannot see. A heating element is a thin wire with an insulating jacket, sewn through fabric that flexes every time somebody turns over. That is thousands of flex cycles per season, concentrated at the same creases.
Insulation eventually cracks. When it does, the conductor can contact something it should not, and the failure is progressive rather than immediate. The blanket keeps working. There is no warning light, no smell, no change in behavior, until there is.
This is why age is the strongest single predictor of risk in this category, and why the general consumer-safety guidance is to replace a heated blanket after roughly a decade regardless of how well it appears to work. Washing frequency and hard folding both accelerate it. Detail on how long they last.
Failure mode 2: heat with nowhere to go
An element is designed to shed its heat across the blanket's whole surface. Reduce the surface and the heat concentrates while production continues.
- Folding or bunching while running. Halves the dissipating surface and doubles the element density in that area.
- Tucking in tightly. The version people do not recognize as folding. It folds the element back under itself along the length of the bed.
- Something heavy on top. A pile of laundry, a pet bed, a suitcase. Every manual prohibits it.
- Covering the controller. Traps heat and defeats the sensing at the same time, which is why several makers state it in capitals.
- Putting it under a mattress or a foam topper. The most complete version of the problem. See placement.
Failure mode 3: the cord and the connector
Less dramatic and more common than people assume. The connector between blanket and controller is plugged and unplugged for every wash, dragged across a bed frame, and pinched under a mattress. Cords get run under rugs and caught in bed frames.
This is the reason for Biddeford's blanket instruction that catches people out: plug directly into a wall outlet, never an extension cord or power strip. It is a connection-integrity rule and it is stated as an absolute rather than a preference.
It is also why every maker in our set says the same thing about moisture: do not use the blanket while it is damp. Water and an energized element in the same textile is a combination with no upside.
The inspection that catches two of the three
Once a season, before the blanket goes back on the bed, and once a month if there is an animal sleeping on it. It takes about two minutes.
- 1Lay it out flat in good light, fully unfolded, both sides.
- 2Look for scorch marks or discoloration. Any browning means a hot spot has already occurred.
- 3Run your hands over the whole surface. You are feeling for a kink, a hard lump, or a place where the wire has bunched or doubled back.
- 4Check every inch of the cord and both ends of the connector for fraying, cracking or damage where it enters the fabric.
- 5Check the controller for cracks, heat damage or a loose socket.
What certification does and does not tell you
Almost every listing says ETL certified and most buyers read past it. It means the product was tested by a nationally recognized laboratory against UL 964, the American standard for household electric heating pads and blankets. Homemate is the only brand in our set that names the standard explicitly rather than implying it.
What it tells you is that the design met the standard when it was tested. What it cannot tell you is anything about the condition of a blanket after eight winters of use, which is the situation this whole page is about. Certification governs how the product left the factory; the three failure modes above are all things that happen afterwards.
Two of the blankets and three of the 12V car blankets in our set name no certification at all, which we record in each product's spec table rather than glossing over.
Recalls
Heated blankets are recalled from time to time, as any electrical product is. The authoritative source in the United States is the Consumer Product Safety Commission, and it is searchable by product and brand. We link it below rather than maintaining our own list, because a stale recall list is worse than no list.
Questions people actually ask
- Do electric blankets cause fires?

- How do I know if my electric blanket is unsafe?
- Lay it flat in good light and look for scorch marks or discoloration, feel for kinks or hard lumps in the wire, and check the whole cord and both connector ends. Any of those means replace it; a heating element cannot be repaired.
- How old is too old for an electric blanket?
- Broad consumer-safety guidance is around ten years, sooner if it has been washed frequently or stored hard-folded. Element insulation degrades from flexing and the failure is invisible until it matters.
- Is it safe to use an electric blanket with an extension cord?
- Biddeford prohibits it outright for its blankets: wall outlet only, no extension cord and no power strip. Where a maker states that, treat it as an absolute rather than a preference.
