Who should not use an electric blanket
The group that matters most is not the one people ask about. Reduced sensation is the real risk, and it is the one least discussed.

The clearest cautions are for infants and very young children, anyone with reduced sensation (diabetic neuropathy, some spinal injuries, heavy sedation), anyone who cannot operate the controller or move away from the heat, and anyone whose doctor has advised against it. Pacemakers and pregnancy come up constantly and both are questions for a clinician, not for us.
The risk almost nobody talks about
Ask most people what is dangerous about a heated blanket and they will say fire. The more common harm is a low-temperature contact burn, and it happens well below the temperature you would expect.
Skin damage is a function of temperature and time together. A surface that feels merely warm, held against skin for hours without the person shifting away, can do damage that a much hotter surface touched briefly would not. Several throws in our set publish top temperatures of 113 F and 122 F, which are comfortable to touch and are sustained contact temperatures for a whole night.
A healthy adult is protected by an automatic response: it gets uncomfortable, and you move or turn it down without really thinking about it. Everything in the list below is a case where that response is impaired, absent, or cannot be acted on.
The specific groups
Reduced or absent sensation
Diabetic peripheral neuropathy is the most common case, and feet are where it usually presents first, which is exactly where a heated blanket concentrates. Spinal cord injuries and some neurological conditions produce the same effect. So does heavy sedation or intoxication: the mechanism does not care why the feedback is missing.
This is the group where we would be most cautious, and it is the group least represented in the marketing copy.
Infants and young children
Very young children cannot reliably tell you they are too hot, cannot move away from the heat source, and cannot operate a controller. That combination is the same one as above arriving by a different route. Manufacturers do not typically state an age threshold, which means the judgment is entirely the parent's and the safe default is not to.
Anyone who cannot work the controller or move
Framed this way rather than by age, because age is a poor proxy. The question is whether the person can read the controller, change the setting, and get out from under the blanket if they want to. Where they can, a heated blanket is a good product for cold nights and often a genuinely valued one.
Where the answer is uncertain, the specifications that matter change completely: a legible display, physical buttons rather than a touch surface, and a shorter auto-off ceiling. We go through the options on heated blankets for older adults.
Pacemakers and implanted devices
This question comes up more than almost any other and we are not going to answer it, because the honest answer depends on the specific device and its manufacturer's guidance. Ask the cardiologist or the device manufacturer. No product listing in our set addresses implanted devices at all, so there is nothing for us to quote even if we wanted to.
Pregnancy
Also a clinical question and also not ours. The concern usually raised is core temperature elevation rather than EMF. Whether a heated blanket is capable of raising core temperature meaningfully, and whether that matters at a given stage, are both medical questions. Ask a midwife or doctor.

Notice what is missing from that table: not one of them addresses who should not use the product. The instructions cover the appliance, not the person. That gap is why this page exists.
If you are buying for someone else
- 1Ask whether they can feel and act on discomfort. That single question covers most of this page.
- 2Choose a shorter auto-off. Sealy's mattress pad stops at nine hours where most run to twelve, and shorter is safer where the user may not switch it off.
- 3Choose a legible controller. Sunbeam's backlit display, or physical buttons over a flat touch panel.
- 4Consider a pad rather than a blanket. A heated mattress pad puts a fitted sheet between the element and the skin and cannot be bunched around a limb.

- Are electric blankets safe for the elderly?
- The question is not age but capability: can the person feel that they are too warm, operate the controller, and move away from the heat. Where the answer is yes, a heated blanket is a good product. Where it is uncertain, a shorter auto-off and a legible controller matter more than anything else. This is not medical advice.
- Can you use an electric blanket with a pacemaker?
- That depends on the specific device and belongs with your cardiologist or the device manufacturer. No product listing in our set addresses implanted devices, so we have nothing to quote and will not guess.
- Are electric blankets safe during pregnancy?
- A clinical question rather than a product one, usually raised in relation to core temperature. Ask a midwife or doctor. Nothing on this site is medical advice.
