Heated throw vs electric blanket

The cost question, answered and dismissed
People assume a throw is cheaper to run because it is smaller. On the published figures it is not: both Bedsure throws state 100 W and the Westinghouse queen states 100 W. Same draw, quarter the area.
That is not a mistake. Wattage tracks element length and density and how the controller is configured, not fabric area. A throw with the same element draw over a smaller area heats faster and feels hotter, which is exactly what people report.
So per hour, they cost the same. In practice a throw usually costs less over a season simply because a four-hour evening is shorter than an eight-hour night. That is a usage difference, not a product one.

Rated wattage is the ceiling, not the average. A thermostatic blanket cycles its element on and off once the bed is warm, so an all-night bill usually lands below the rated-watt figure. We publish the rated number because it is the only one the maker stands behind, and we do not estimate a duty cycle for a blanket we have not measured.
What actually decides it
Coverage, and this is where the disappointment in this category comes from. A throw at 50 by 60 inches covers one seated adult from shoulders to ankles with nothing spare. It is closer in spirit to a dressing gown than to bedding.
- One person on a sofa: throw. It is the right size and it is easy to move.
- Two people on a sofa: a bed-size blanket draped over the pair of you. A throw each means two controllers and a cold gap in the middle.
- A bed: a bed blanket, matched to the mattress. A throw on a bed covers your torso and leaves your feet out.
- Both sofa and bed: a full or queen blanket is the versatile answer, at the cost of being awkward to carry between rooms.
