  • A published temperature range first. For this use the delivered temperature is the relevant specification and hardly anybody publishes it. Three brands do.
  • Then coverage and shape, because where you want the warmth decides the format.
  • Then timer granularity, since sessions here are often shorter than a night.

Why temperature is the relevant spec here

Everywhere else on this site we lead with wattage, because the question being asked is what it costs to run. Here the question is different: how warm does it actually get, and can I choose that precisely.

Wattage tells you nothing about that. A 100 W throw over a small area can deliver a higher surface temperature than a 220 W blanket over a bed. The two numbers answer different questions, and for this use the temperature is the one worth having.

How to read those numbers

Some context, without crossing into advice about what temperature you should use.

  • Normal skin surface temperature is around 91 F. Anything below that will not feel warm.
  • A warm bath is about 100 F. Beautyrest's ceiling of 105 F is a little above that.
  • Sealy's twin reaches 126 F and Homemate's throw 122 F. Those are the hottest published figures in our set.
  • Sustained contact at the upper end is where burn risk becomes a genuine consideration, particularly for anyone with reduced sensation. That is covered on who should not use one, and it applies here with force because warmth-seeking and reduced sensation often occur in the same person.

Granularity matters as much as the ceiling

A range is only useful if you can move around inside it. Homemate covers 86 to 122 F in ten steps, so each step is roughly four degrees. Beautyrest covers 85 to 105 F in three steps, roughly seven degrees each.

Neither is wrong. Ten fine steps let you find a precise level; three coarse ones are simpler to operate, which matters for the reasons set out on blankets for older adults. If dexterity is a factor, three buttons that do something obvious can beat twelve settings you cannot navigate.

The line we are not crossing

It is worth stating explicitly on a page like this. Every listing in our set sells warmth and comfort. None of them claims to treat a condition, and neither do we.

One listing in our wider research described a heated product as promoting blood circulation and relieving muscle discomfort. We have not repeated that claim in the product entry and we are not repeating it here, because it is a physiological claim from a bedding manufacturer with nothing behind it. If warmth helps you, it helps you; that is your experience and it does not need a marketing department to validate it.

Is a heated blanket or a heating pad better for a sore joint?
They are different tools. A pad is small, hotter and designed for short targeted sessions; a blanket is large, gentler and designed for hours. Using a pad overnight is where burn risk concentrates.
