What an electric blanket costs per night

Fifteen cents at 100 watts. Thirty-two at 220. Here is the arithmetic in full, the source of the rate, and the three things that move the number.

An eight-hour night under a 100 W blanket costs about 15 cents at the US average residential rate of $0.1834/kWh. A 130 W full is about 19 cents. A 220 W dual-control queen with both sides running is about 32 cents. One side alone is about 16 cents.

There is one calculation on this whole site and this is it. Watts to kilowatts, kilowatts times hours to kilowatt-hours, kilowatt-hours times your rate to dollars.

We publish the rated number because it is the only one the maker stands behind, and we do not estimate a duty cycle for a blanket we have not measured.

Three things that change your number

1. Your rate, which is not the national average

The single biggest variable, and the one every generic answer ignores. US residential electricity rates vary by more than a factor of two between states. The 18.34 cents we use is a national mean and there is no reason your bill matches it.

Find the per-kWh rate on your own bill and multiply the kWh column above by it. At 12 cents, a 100 W night is under 10 cents. At 30 cents it is 24 cents. Same blanket, same eight hours.

2. How long it is actually on

Eight hours is our default because it approximates a night's sleep, and it flatters nobody. A lot of people run a blanket for thirty minutes to warm the bed and switch it off, which is a sixteenth of the figure above: about a cent.

Preheating and switching off is the cheapest way to use any of these products, and several makers build it in. Bedsure publishes a preheat curve of two hours at level 6 followed by six hours at level 4, precisely so the element is not at full draw all night.

3. The duty cycle we do not estimate

The honest caveat on all of the above. A thermostatic blanket does not draw its rated wattage continuously. Once the bed reaches temperature the element cycles off and back on to hold it, so actual consumption is below the rated arithmetic.

How far below depends on the blanket, the room temperature, the bedding on top and the setting. Measuring it would require a blanket and a meter, and we have neither. So we publish the rated figure, label it as a ceiling, and leave it at that rather than inventing a percentage.

What 15 cents buys, in context

Numbers this small are hard to feel, so three comparisons at the same rate and the same eight hours:

  • A 100 W electric blanket: 0.8 kWh, about 15 cents.
  • A 1,500 W space heater: 12 kWh, about $2.20. Fifteen times as much. Worked out in full.
  • A 10 W LED bulb: 0.08 kWh, about 1.5 cents. So a heated blanket costs roughly what ten light bulbs cost, which is the most intuitive framing we have found for it.

Questions people actually ask

How much does it cost to run an electric blanket all night?
About 15 cents for eight hours at 100 W, and about 32 cents at 220 W with both sides of a dual-control blanket running, at the US average rate of $0.1834/kWh. Multiply the kWh figures by your own rate for an exact answer.
Is it expensive to leave an electric blanket on all night?
No. At the highest published wattage in our set it is about 32 cents a night, and most blankets have an auto shut-off that ends the session between eight and twelve hours anyway.
How much electricity does an electric blanket use in 8 hours?
0.8 kWh at 100 W, 1.04 kWh at 130 W, and 1.76 kWh at 220 W. Multiply by your per-kWh rate for the cost.
Does an electric blanket use less electricity on a low setting?
Yes. Rated wattage is the draw at maximum; a lower setting means the element spends more time cycled off. How much less is not something we can quantify for a blanket we have not measured, so we publish the rated figure as an upper bound.
